Train Derailment Settlement to Be Paid Despite Appeal

The East Palastine, Ohio train derailment in February 2023 caused an uproar when it occurred not only because of the derailment itself, but also due to the way it was handled. Suits were filed and appeals were volleyed back. However, a court has ruled that the people who lived near that disaster should still be able to receive personal injury payments even though the bulk of the a $600 million class action settlement with Norfolk Southern railroad remains on hold during its appeal. Residents living within 10 miles of the crash that produced toxic fumes were eligible to receive up to $25,000 each, according to reports.
