27 NOVEMBER 2020: TEGUCIGALPA, HONDURAS

Manuel Zelaya, 68, former president of Honduras, was arrested on suspicion of money laundering at Toncontin International Airport because he was carrying a bag containing $18,000 (c. £ 13,200). Zelaya was later released and claimed that someone placed the money in his bag. At the time of his arrest, supporters of the former president protested outside the airport and blocked traffic.

A flight from Moscow that was due to take off to Zhengzhou, China, was cancelled after all passengers’ coronavirus test results came back with same result – that they had antibodies for the coronavirus.

22 NOVEMBER 2020: SHANGHAI, CHINA

All employees at Shanghai Pudong Airport were ordered to take Covid-19 tests after several cargo handlers tested positive for the coronavirus. As staff were forcibly quarantined, chaotic scenes ensued as many tried to leave. The airport cancelled most of their evening flights.

16 NOVEMBER 2020: ENTEBBE, UGANDA

Reports emerged that Effrance Musimenta Mbagaya, director for human resources and administration at the Ugandan Civil Aviation Authority, was arrested for allegedly ordering the removal of President Museveni campaign posters after some staff had complained about their placement on the building and in the offices.

21 NOVEMBER 2020: ZANZIBAR, TANZANIA

Hemed Suleiman Abdalla, Zanzibar’s second vice president, travelled to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport and discovered that the security scanners were faulty. He ordered all the scanners to be fixed and claimed that the faulty scanners provided a loophole for illicit activities.

15 NOVEMBER 2020: BANJUL, THE GAMBIA

The Gabon football team arrived at Banjul Airport the day before their match against The Gambia in an African Cup of Nations qualifying match but were prevented from leaving the airport due to an administrative problem relating to Covid tests. Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who plays for Arsenal, tweeted about the problem. Ivory Coast captain, and Tottenham player, Serge Aurier, tweeted his support for the Gabon team. Gabon were able to leave in the morning, hours before their game, which they lost to The Gambia 2-1.

14 NOVEMBER 2020: NEWARK, NEW JERSEY

Amani Al-Khatahtbeh, 28, founder of the website MuslimGirl, was removed from an American Airlines flight before take-off from Newark International Airport to Charlotte, because a fellow passenger felt ‘uncomfortable’ with her presence on the flight. Al-Khatahtbeh and the fellow passenger had an argument during check-in as the passenger accused Al-Khatahtbeh of cutting the line and that he should go first as he was registered for TSA pre-check. The passenger then cut in front of Al-Khatahtbeh.
