Man Awakes to Container Ship in Front Lawn

An enormous container ship running aground on the front lawn of a Norwegian man’s home. The man, Johan Helberg, who lives in Byneset, Norway, on the Trondheim Fjord, says he slept through the event and was woken by his neighbor on Thursday morning, May 22. The neighbor asked if he had noticed a boat outside, TV2 Norway reported. In his front lawn he saw the 135-meter-long (443-foot) container ship that had run aground in his front yard.

The boat, the NCL Salten, ran aground about eight meters (26 feet) from the wall of house. The vessel is said to have been headed to Orkanger, at the southern end of the fjord. There were 16 people on board when it ran aground.

Managing director of the shipping company NCL, Bente Hetland, called it a “serious incident.” The company said it is “grateful that nobody was injured in the grounding.”

“At present time, we do not know what caused the incident and are awaiting the conclusion of the ongoing investigation by the relevant authorities,” Hetland said in a statement. “We are currently assessing the damage to the ship.”

A tugboat unsuccessfully attempted to pull the vessel free. That evening, a salvage company tried to refloat the ship at high tide, but that attempt was also unsuccessful, the Norwegian Coastal Administration said in a statement.
