Signicat has signed a contract with The Danish Agency for Digital Government to support Denmark’s official mobile driving license, and to provide NFC-based identity verification for the country’s upcoming digital identity wallet, part of the EU Digital Identity framework.
Through the contract, Signicat will be the technology provider for the existing mobile driving license app, called Kørekort-appen, and now also support the verification required for the coming digital identity wallet. The project is part of Denmark’s implementation of the EU’s eIDAS 2.0 regulation and is being rolled out in stages, with the first version of the wallet expected in the first half of 2026.
Signicat’s ReadID technology uses NFC to read the secure chip in passports, identity and residence cards. This allows citizens to verify their identity by retrieving the official facial image and data stored in their passports. No new biometric data is created or stored while the process runs entirely on the citizen’s device and leverages the cryptographic integrity of the passport data.
“We’re honored to be a supplier to Denmark’s digital identity infrastructure,” said Asger Hattel, CEO of Signicat. “With ReadID, citizens can securely use the data already embedded in their passport to prove who they are. We’re pleased to support both Denmark’s official mobile driving license and the new digital identity wallet as it is adopted by the Danish public.” REadID continues to support secure onboarding of new users. Since the app was launched in November 2020, 2.1 million digital driving licenses have been created.
DIGST began work on the digital identity wallet in spring 2025. The wallet will allow Danish residents to hold and present credentials such as digital ID, age verification, or other proofs. Like the mobile driving license, the wallet will be voluntary and aligned with Denmark’s strong privacy protections.
