Sydney, Australia Airport Went on Lockdown Due to Incident

Eyewitnesses said a “really loud bang” occurred August 12, and many people fled the area of the Sydney Airport where an attempted arrest was happening inside one of the domestic terminals at the airport.

A man has been charged after a police officer’s gun went off inside Sydney Airport’s domestic terminal, with witnesses describing scene as “chaotic” as passengers fled for safety. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) reported that officers responded to a request for assistance from an airline after the man was “acting suspiciously” at the airline’s check-in counter.

AFP allege the man was “known to police” after a previous interaction on Tuesday at the airport terminal.

“Today … when officers tried to speak to the man, he allegedly became verbally and physically aggressive and was subsequently arrested.” During the arrest, the AFP said one of its firearms was unintentionally discharged. The bullet fired was lodged into the oven of one of the terminal’s cafes, a few feet away from where the firearm was discharged.
