TSA May Be Dropping Requirement for Travelers to Remove Shoes at Some Airports

TSA may have begun to drop its requirement for travelers to remove shoes, sources say. Some airports, including LaGuardia, could be among those that are dropping the shoe removal requirement.

A source familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity and said the agency has not officially announced the change and did not confirm the new policy, but it does appear to be taking effect at airports across the country.

“TSA and DHS are always exploring new and innovative ways to enhance the passenger experience and our strong security posture,” a TSA spokesman said in a NYT report. “Any potential updates to our security process will be issued through official channels.”

Passengers in the U. S. have been required to removed their shoes when going through security since 2006 after a terrorist tried to detonate an explosive in his shoe while aboard an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami.

This is a developing story.
