Cruise Ship Moorings Snap, Ship Drifts

The mooring lines keeping a Celebrity Cruises ship docked at a pier in Alaska snapped during strong winds, causing the vessel to drift out into open water. While visiting Alaska’s capital, Juneau, on Monday, June 16, the Celebrity Edge was met with extreme weather.

In images from the event, the mooring lines can still be seen attached to the front of the cruise ship as the back moves farther away from the pier. One of the lines snaps and falls into the choppy waters as the wind blows against the ship.

The other two mooring lines still attached to the ship were seen rapidly moving back and forth against the high winds. The captain was able to turn on the front thrusters at the bow of the ship and eventually re-docked the vessel.

Geopolitical Tensions Lead to Increasing Risks for Shipping Sector Globally

The fast-changing geopolitical landscape is creating new risks and challenges for a shipping industry already juggling the energy transition and the legacy of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to “Allianz Commercial’s Safety and Shipping Review.” The industry faces an increasingly volatile and complex operating environment, marked by attacks against shipping, vessel detentions, sanctions, as well as the fall-out from incidents involving damage to critical sub-sea cables. Furthermore, the ripple effect of increasing protectionism and tariffs threatens to remake supply chains and shake up established trade relations.

Given 90% of international trade is transported across oceans, those developments are concerning, especially as the industry continues to see the potential for large claims from traditional risks such as fires, collisions and groundings, which are still the main drivers for total losses of large vessels. However, there is also good news. The shipping industry has made significant improvements when it comes to maritime safety in recent years. During the 1990s the global fleet was losing 200+ vessels a year. This total had halved 10 years ago and is now down to a record low of 27 as of the end of 2024 (from 35 in 2023).

“The relevance of political risk and conflict as a potential cause of maritime loss is increasing with heightened geopolitical tensions. Total losses from traditional causes may have reduced over time, but we could be in a position where this positive trend is potentially offset by war and other political-related exposures. As an industry, we are in a better position with regards to traditional risks, but there is a renewed focus on geopolitical risks,” says Captain Rahul Khanna, global head of marine risk consulting, Allianz Commercial.

US-China trade conflict and growing shadow fleet bring uncertainty and challenges
China has been the biggest target of the protectionist measures of the US administration with tariffs reaching 145%, before both countries agreed to reduce them for 90 days. Developments have significantly impacted global maritime trade with approximately 18% of it subject to tariffs as of mid-April 2025, compared with 4% in early March, and dramatic declines in shipments reported in the immediate aftermath of the “Liberation Day” announcements. While the future of US trade-focused policies remains uncertain, another phenomenon is posing an increasing challenge for the maritime and insurance industries: the shadow fleet. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, the size of the shadow fleet has grown significantly. Today, around 17% of the world tanker fleet is thought to belong to the shadow fleet: estimates indicate there are close to 600 tankers trading Russian oil alone. Shadow fleet vessels have been involved in tens of incidents around the world including fires, collisions and oil spills.

“Although recent sanctions are making it harder for these vessels to trade, the shadow fleet continues to pose a serious risk to maritime safety and the environment, as many are likely to be older vessels that are poorly maintained and inadequately insured. In case of an oil spill involving a shadow fleet tanker, cleanup costs could be as much as US$1.6bn,” said Justus Heinrich, global product leader, marine hull, Allianz Commercial.

Fires and mis-declared cargo remain a top concern for large vessels
Large vessel fires are still a major concern for hull and cargo insurers. There were seven total losses reported across all vessel types during 2024, the same number as a year earlier. The number of incidents overall was up year-on-year to a decade high of 250, again across all vessel types. Around 30% of these fire incidents occurred on either container, cargo or roll-on roll-off vessels (ro-ros) (69). More than 100 total losses of vessels have been caused by fires in the past decade. Efforts to mitigate these risks are underway, with regulatory changes and technological advancements aimed at addressing mis-declared cargo, a primary contributor to such fires. This is critical as the electrification of the global economy poses further challenges given the growing number of lithium-ion batteries and battery energy storage systems being transported.

“There is little doubt the shipping industry is becoming more resilient against the risks associated with large vessels, although we can by no means say they are under control. However, only 27 total losses during 2024 underlines the positive trend. To put this into perspective: there are over 100,000 ships (100GT+) in the global fleet. However, uncertainty and multiple risks persist. Cyber-attacks and GPS interferences are increasing. Ceasefires have raised hopes, but the Red Sea security threat and supply chain disruption will likely remain. Meanwhile, the green transition requires much work. The coming years will be decisive and will determine the path of the sector and global trade,” said Captain Khanna.

Italian city of Imperia relies on video technology from Dallmeier

The port city of Imperia in north-west Italy has become a popular tourist destination over the years. In order to better secure both the city and the port area, Imperia decided to expand its video surveillance system. At the heart of the system are Dallmeier’s Panomera® multifocal sensor cameras.

Imperia is a pretty city of the province of Liguria and is located in the northwest of Italy on the Riviera di Ponente. Originally an industrial town, Imperia has developed over the years into a popular tourist destination, whilst retaining the character of a small fishing village. Picturesquely situated between the sea and the hills, it offers a wide range of leisure activities for both locals and visitors: You can stroll through the small, narrow streets of the town called “carruggi”, relax on the beaches with crystal clear waters or explore one of the many museums in the area.

Video technology for critical areas

Like many places, Imperia faces the challenges of being a vibrant and busy city. There have been repeated incidents of inappropriate behaviour, vandalism and crime. Particularly critical areas, such as the access area to the marina, required an upgrade of the video security system.

“One of the main requirements for the system was to be able to reconstruct events of interest with high reliability and high resolution”, says Daniele Sisinio, Director Dallmeier Italia, explaining the customer’s requirements.

Integration into a management system

Imperia has been using video surveillance technology for many years. The original system was based on a marina system with numerous cameras from different manufacturers, which were finally integrated into a Dallmeier management system. Later, the marina and city surveillance systems were unified. As a result, not only were additional cameras from other manufacturers integrated into the management system, but a selection of state-of-the-art Dallmeier cameras were also added to the infrastructure.

Everything in view at all times

In addition to numerous single sensor cameras, Dallmeier’s Panomera® multifocal sensor technology is at the heart of the system. This offers many advantages, especially when monitoring large areas or long distances. The patented Panomera® technology combines several lenses and sensors with different focal lengths in one optical unit. Thus, Panomera® cameras also capture rear and middle image areas with the same high resolution as scenes in the foreground. Not only does this mean that significantly fewer cameras are needed than with conventional technology, which naturally leads to savings in the necessary infrastructure such as cables, masts, etc. The system is also much easier and less complicated to operate: security personnel always have a complete overview of the scene, while at the same time any number of detailed views can be displayed in high resolution. The detail zooms can be opened with a simple mouse click in the overall image, like “virtual” PTZ cameras – both live and in recording. This allows any number of operators to view the footage simultaneously. Additionally, everything is always recorded at the highest resolution. This means that incidents can be traced and reconstructed for use in court, and perpetrators identified, even after the fact.

Reliable on-site recording

In addition to the high image quality, the high reliability of the data recording was extremely important to the security managers at Imperia. “By using the very flexible and scalable SeMSy® management system from Dallmeier, we were able to create a client-server architecture that is exactly tailored to our needs. We use IPS 10000 appliances to store images from a large number of cameras. At the same time, we were able to place compact recording devices on site with the VideoNetBox to ensure local data recording without necessarily relying on radio links”, explains Alessio Meneghello, CEO of High Intelligence.

Strict data protection requirements

The city of Imperia attached great importance to secure data management. In accordance with the “Privacy & Security by Design” guideline, products from Dallmeier have the highest level of technical precautions with which customers can easily implement video security solutions that comply with data protection regulations – from setting up “private zones” to sophisticated access concepts and secure authentication procedures in accordance with IEEE 802.1X. The video system also meets all requirements for evidence in court and has been tested for image quality, security against tampering and protection against unauthorised access by LGC Forensics Certification.

Smooth operation

Dallmeier Italia implemented the project in close cooperation with its certified partner High Intelligence. Dallmeier actively supported High Intelligence during the planning phase and on-site demonstrations to ensure that the solution was optimally tailored to the customer’s needs. High Intelligence took care of the complete installation, configuration and calibration of the video surveillance system. With many years of experience in managing high quality video surveillance systems, the company is able to ensure the smooth operation of the system 24/7. This results in an optimisation of the security work carried out by the operators and the law enforcement agencies and increases the security of visitors to the city.

Reduction of incidents The use of the video surveillance system is showing positive results. “By installing the cameras in several strategic locations, such as the roads and access routes to the marina and the city of Imperia, we have been able to consistently reduce the occurrence of critical incidents”, says a satisfied Dr. Hon. Claudio Scajola, Mayor of Imperia.

Crosswalks Hacked In Seattle, Wash. and Other Locations

Multiple crosswalks in Seattle, Wash. were hacked into yesterday. When waiting for the crosswalk pedestrians were greeted with an AI generated voice message imitating Jeff Bezos voice.

The Seattle Department of Transportation is working to track down and fix crosswalk buttons they say were compromised to make a “political statement,” impersonating an e-commerce billionaire.

The voice said, “Hi. I’m Jeff Bezos. This crosswalk is sponsored by Amazon Prime, with an important message. Ya know? Please, please don’t tax the rich. Otherwise all the other billionaires will move to Florida too. Wouldn’t it be terrible if all the rich people left Seattle — or got Luigi’d — and then the normal people could afford to live here again?”

It’s unclear how the technology was compromised, but Ethan Bergerson, press secretary for SDOT, said, “Audio recordings at crosswalks play a critical role for people who are blind… we are concerned that someone would disregard the safety of people.”

Just days ago a similar hack occurred in California, where somebody compromised a crosswalk to add an audio clip of an impersonator of another tech billionaire, Tesla founder Elon Musk, in Palo Alto. In that crosswalk, the voice can be heard saying, “You know they say money can’t buy happiness, and yeah, OK. I guess that’s true, God knows I’ve tried. But it can buy a Cybertruck, and that’s pretty sick, right? Right?” (expletive) I’m so alone.”

Additionally, a push button in Menlo Park was made to sound like Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg. It can be heard saying, “It’s normal to feel uncomfortable, or even violated as we forcefully insert AI into every, every facet of your conscious experience. And I just want to assure you, you don’t need to worry, because there is absolutely nothing you can do to stop it.”
